Vehicles Affected:

MINI Cooper & Cooper "S" all models 2007-2014

If you have wet carpet on the passenger floor, or have a damp mildew smell in your vehicle. Check the passenger floor board or carpet for water saturation.

The carpet pad on the generation 2 Mini Cooper is almost 2 inches thick. So a lot of water will hide under the carpet before you will notice a problem.

During this rainy weather we are having in Texas we have had several cars brought to us with unusual electric problems ranging from head light, wiper, or headlight malfunctions, to complete battery drain issues.

What we have discovered is water migrating into the vehicle, under the carpet, and then flooding various expensive electronic control modules. (See photo 1)

#2 - Battery Cover Leak

These control modules are located under the passenger seat, and drivers and passenger side foot well. Unfortunately water and electronic components don't get along. And the water seem to win the battle every time.

To properly dry the carper we recommend removing seats and pulling up the carpet on the passenger floor.
Most of this you can inspect yourself, and it will all make sense. If the battery cover hing is broker and the cover is missing during a 3 inch rain you can bet that 3 inches of water will end up in your car. (See photo 2)

The windshield cowl seal is the soft rubber seal that is part of the cowl cover. Any water that gets behind the cowl seal will enter the passenger compartment once water level raises.

Other Areas That Can Leak: Mini Cooper clogged sunroof drains:

It very important the keep sunroof drain tubes clear and capable of flowing there maximum water capacity.

#4 - Damaged Window Seal

The sunroof seals are only designed to repel large volumes of water. Any excess water that enters this area around the sunroof opening is channeled into the drain tubes to be dumped out under the vehicle. Any over flow will end up inside the vehicle.

Consider Where You Park:

Parking your Mini Cooper under tress that shed leave and pine needles are the primary cause of clogged sunroof drains, and windshield cowl drain tubes.
The MINI Cooper S performance exhaust system by Sound Speed is a direct
replacement to the factory exhaust system with upgraded tubing diameter
and muffler design resulting in more horsepower to the wheels.

The system is constructed of 100% 304 stainless steel, and it is made
with 63.5mm diameter tubing which is about 10mm more than the MINI
Cooper S factory exhaust tubing. The longer stainless steel resonator
removes some of the drone sound from the engine, and the rear muffler is
fully welded, not crimped seams making it more desirable for
performance applications. This Sound Speed exhaust system is hand-made
in Italy, and designed specifically for the MINI Cooper S R56. (Read
more info about each individual component below.)
Part Number: 122 063 212
The Sound Speed turbo down pipe is 304 stainless steel with
mandrel bent tubing. Each pipe is 65mm diameter giving a very low back
pressure which enables turbo spool up for high horsepower & torque
gains. Installing a complete performance exhaust system achieve +26 hp
with +20 lb/fts of torque.

In place of the factory quad cat design, soundspeed uses high
volume and flow 200 cell count metallic race cats. These are placed
further away from the engine for the lowest restriction and the best
results.

Sound Speed alternative Center pipes with resonator replace the
metallic race catalytic converters. After the turbo down pipe flange,
the diameter down-sizes from 65mm to 60mm. This is still larger than the
factory 57mm diameter. This diameter is this size all the way to the
tail tips.

Our Center Pipes are mandrel bent for maximum flow and performance, and
are manufactured from 100% 304 stainless steel. There are no crushed
places in the tubing like the factory exhaust pipe.

These problems are especially apparent on any performance vehicle including all BMW or MINI vehicles in the North American market with a greater level of poor gasoline quality. The solution by BMW North America is regular use of Fuel System Cleaner Plus with Techron fuel system cleaner. This product not only cleans restrictive deposits from the fuel system but also protects the fuel gauge from future malfunction by coating all metal surfaces of the system.

Combustion chamber deposit formation is a by-product of the gasoline burning process. This is especially problematic in any vehicle that is driven under severe conditions such as stop-and-go traffic, high ambient temperatures, higher altitudes, and short "start and stop" distance driving. Most common problems experienced include:

Hesitation during acceleration or loss of power

Poor fuel efficiency

Poor driveability and rough idle

Knocking, pinging, and engine idle surges

Increased emissions

One bottle treats up to 20 gallons of fuel and is proven to clean deposits on fuel injectors, ports, and intake valves while causing absolutely no harm to catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, or any mechanical components of the engine or fuel delivery system. While it is true that this additive is not as effective in a turbo charged vehicle with direct injection since it doesn't help clean the intake valves, it still removes deposits from the fuel injectors that restrict normal performance.

Even a small crack can cause the seal
to fail and water to enter the hatch.

Something we have seen in our shop more and more frequently as these cars get older and take some abuse, is the presence of water in the back hatch storage compartment of several R50 and R53 MINI Coopers. This problem is directly attributed to the seal around the hatch door handle wearing out and allowing rain and other water in. Sometimes the leak can come from the plastic handle itself cracking from repeated pulling or from using it to support the weight of the hatch itself.

Rust and mud spreading from the screw holes

This can be a costly repair if left unchecked. Not only have we seen rust damage in these areas that can rot the sheet metal, but in the Cooper S the battery and several electronics attached to the battery can be destroyed. Repair of the cables, sensors, and fuses connected to the battery are a minimum of several hundred dollars in parts alone and will require several labor hours of wire routing.

This handle is held on by 4 screws and is easy to replace on your own. If your handle is not cracked and in good shape, you can just replace the gasket. If the handle is cracked, you can replace the entire handle, with a new gasket included, safely and easily. If you ever wanted to upgrade the look of the rear of your MINI, this is also a great opportunity to upgrade to a black or chrome handle that will not require any color match painting.
Over time and use, the rubber pieces of this system separate, causing the entire pulley to buckle. Any vehicle that suffers from this problem is completely undriveable. Promini has a solution that eliminates this issue at an incredible savings over the original MINI vibration damper.

Promini offers an SFI-Rated FluidGel Harmonic Damper (vibration
damper) available for the Mini Cooper and Cooper S. These dampers are made with an
internal steel inertia ring that is surrounded by a high viscosity
silicone gel. This internal inertia ring floats in a silicone gel to
combat the engine harmonics at all RPM ranges. This eliminates the
rubber dampening ring of the original equipment component which is the
common reason of lower crank pulley failure.

These Pulleys:
- Exceed SFI Specification 18.1 Requirements (This SFI Specification establishes uniform test procedures and minimum standards for evaluating and determining performance capabilities for
Crankshaft Hub Harmonic Dampers used by individuals engaged in competitive motorsports.)
- Accurate Crankbore for a proper pressed fit
- Easy to read engraved timing marks
- Manufactured from high grade billet carbon steel forgings
- 8.5% smaller than the standard original equipment underdrive pulley
Ever been on a spirited drive in your MINI and had that troublesome "service engine soon" light or "check engine" light take all the fun out of your day? Your MINI Cooper is a precision built machine that constantly monitors operating systems to ensure high level performance. If there is any problem with operation, or time for a maintenance issue to be addressed, it will trigger one of these warning lights. Promini has a compact tool that can properly read and report MINI engine and service codes safely and easily. Having the ability to properly diagnose engine lights from a parking lot, garage, or roadside is a valuable asset that saves you time and gives you peace of mind.

A warning light should never be ignored and can range from anything as simple as a loose gas cap to a serious timing issue. It's never fun to go to a mechanic and pay over a hundred dollar fee to find out a technician only had to replace your radiator cap, or pay for a costly engine repair that could have been prevented by having that engine light checked sooner. Our fault code reader can quickly and easily give you an accurate reading of what your engine light is trying to tell you as it happens. Built specifically for MINI applications, our fault code reader reads and displays all MINI-factory fault codes.
Warning lights also come on to indicate routine maintenance issues such as brake component replacement and oil service. A routine MINI
oil service with system reset can run anywhere from $100-$150 at a service shop, but with our service reset tool the same oil service can be performed at home for a fraction of the cost. Don't stare at that glaring service light when you know its already been taken care of. A "must have" for any at-home or independent service mechanic, this service reset tool is an inexpensive way to save time and money.Phillip Wilmethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15824979436166990859noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020978724713437900.post-59673948408143773012012-12-21T14:06:00.001-08:002012-12-21T14:41:41.382-08:00MINI Cooper Strut and Shock Installation Socket

Our local service shop regularly replaces several struts and rear shocks on R50, R52, R53 MINI Coopers from this type of wear. Routine replacement of these parts is the only way to keep your MINI at its original performance level, and is an excellent way to upgrade your suspension if you are looking for a sportier feel. MINI struts and shocks are simple to replace, but require a proper torque and tightening procedure for the lock nut to avoid damaging or breaking the delicate mounting stud.

Improper tightening of the lock nut may also result in breaking of the fragile upper shock center stud. Neither of these conditions would be covered by any manufacturers warranty.

Promini is proud to announce a new tool that makes strut and shock replacement easy and safe with no additional special tools required. Any 1/2" drive socket wrench and appropriate allen wrench will work with our new Strut Removal Socket. The factory upper front strut nut is typically 21mm, while most replacement struts or performance struts use a 22mm nut size. symptoms of chain tensioner failure on the R56, R55 is a slight rattling sound
from the passenger side of the engine valve cover, even with engine running but
not driven. The rattle sound will increase with speed, but go away when the
engine reaches approximately 1800 R.P.M. The sound will return when the engine
returns to lower R.P.M.s during deceleration or idle. In early stages
this sound may be more pronounced at colder temperatures, but in more severe
cases the sound and vibration will be heard at all temperatures.
tensioner. If driven for an extended period of time the results will be a broken
plastic tensioner rail or upper guide rail. The noise you are hearing is the
loose timing chain resulting from a collapsed timing chain tensioner.
slapping action of the timing chain will eventually break the tension rails.
This condition will also effect cam timing and risk an eventual chain failure.
The chain will also need to be replaced at the time of repair in case of
stretching or elongation. We do not recommend driving a vehicle in this
condition other than at low R.P.M. to a nearby repair shop.
PRODUCT UPDATE

Mishimoto all Aluminum Radiator

The Mishimoto
MINI Cooper S radiator is designed and engineered as a direct original
equipment replacement; no cutting, fabrication or modification will be
required for installation. The radiator is constructed with a two row
brazed aluminum core and TIG welded polished aluminum end tanks.
Replacing the OEM radiator on a MINI Cooper S with an aluminum
performance radiator from Mishimoto improves cooling capacity and keeps
the engine cool to prevent overheating. Maintaining the proper
temperatures in the engine will help extend its life and improve its
overall performance.
Mishimoto radiators are designed to efficiently reduce the heat from
vital areas. Made with 100% brazed aluminum cores for a clean OEM fit,
Mishimoto radiators ensure excellence and a lifetime of efficient
cooling. Lightweight, they are perfect for any turbocharged,
supercharged, or nitrous oxide injected engine.

Why select an all aluminum radiator, over the factory plastic/aluminum style?

Since 2001 all MINI radiators have consisted of an aluminum cooling core
with plastic end tanks. The tanks and core are joined with an "O" ring
seal, and integrated aluminum crimp clamps on the radiator core. These
plastic end tanks are the weak link and will typically fail after 3-4
years of heat cycling. In some situations even sooner if the vehicle has
been over heated. The rubber "O" ring seal joint also has a tendency to
start leaking.
Most MINI Cooper cooling system
issues are the result of a failure of one or several of the plastic
factory cooling system components. These include the radiators with
plastic coolant tanks and plastic expansion tanks. We recommend
replacing these plastic parts with aluminum designs for better stability
and performance.

(read the updated recall information below)

How can I tell if this affects my MINI? - a burning plastic smell, and/or smoke from the front of the vehicle.

The problem has occurred on models that have with the N14 engine with the electric auxiliary water pump.
When the motor is off, the electric auxiliary water pump (controlled electronically by an engine control unit) conducts heat away from the turbocharger, and this is where the pump’s electronic circuit board malfunction can occur. There is a small chance that the circuit board can fail after the water pump fails leading to smoldering of the water pump and engine compartment fire.

MINI Cooper S models affected:
2007-11 / Cooper S (Dec 2006 – Oct 2010)
2008-11 / Cooper S Clubman (Dec 2007 – Oct 2010)
2009-11 / Cooper S Convertible (Dec 2008 – Oct 2010)
2009-11 / John Cooper Works (JCW) (Jun 2008 – Oct 2010)
2009-11 / John Cooper Works (JCW) Clubman (Jun 2008 – Oct 2010)
2009-11 / John Cooper Works (JCW) Convertible (Apr 2009 – Oct 2010)
2011 / Cooper S Countryman (Nov 2010 – Jan 2011)

What to do next?
Continue to drive your mini, but MINI advises keeping your vehicle outdoors until repairs have been done.
Owners affected cars will get a recall letter asking them to have this service done by their authorized MINI dealer, do so as soon as possible.

Other Information:

MINI is fixing all cars in its inventory and will be announcing a formal recall shortly.

Any new or pre-owned MINI in dealers inventory will be held until the recall can be completed, but customer cars are not yet being held and the recall repair will not be happening until the service bulletin is released.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the cars after 12 engine fires had been reported including five that destroyed the cars entirely.

We will post any new information regarding this issue as soon as we receive it.PROMINIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17207826689681958129noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020978724713437900.post-89912391931700773962011-12-23T15:29:00.000-08:002011-12-23T15:56:18.907-08:00Mini Cooper Countryman "S" Performance Exhaust by Supersprint - information, parts, dyno charts, & video. read more...

Pretty cool car. It's really kind of a Texas version of a Mini Cooper. I'll stop here before I start talking about Texas Bull horns as a hood ornament.

Adding a performance exhaust is one of the first upgrade a new car owner will do to their Mini Cooper and the Countryman is no exception. Reducing back pressure, allowing the car to breath seems to be the first order of the day.

We just recently received our first shipment of Countryman "S" exhaust systems from Supersprint Italy. Like all Superprint setups you get a choice of performance, and sound.

For appearance, sound, and a respectable performance gains you simply install the rear muffler assembly and the 100mm chrome tips. This set up offers a flow through resonated rear muffler that increases exhaust velocity and reduces back pressure, without violating any local sound or emissions ordinances. Installation is simple. The rear muffler will need to be cut at the junction pipe. Then your new Supersprint muffler will slip over and clamp. Parts required are muffler # 022 831 204, and tip kit 022 830 424. This system is emissions and sound legal in all 50 states

For further improvement of flow characteristics and no cutting of your existing system you will need to purchase the front connecting pipe # 022 831 212, and center resonator #022 831 203. as well as the muffler and tip kit mentioned above. This system is emissions and sound legal in all 50 states

For all out performance Supersprint offers a high flow metallic race catalytic converter. This set up will maximize performance, by reducing back pressure to a minimum. This will offer the fastest turbo spool up, by drooping back pressure to Zero P.S.I. For high horsepower modified engines this system is a must. This set up is not street legal for highway application.

The alternator light was on, and there was a horrible burnt smell and smoke coming from under the hood. Once the smoke cleared, (literally) we checked what was going on. My first thought was alternator seized up and the burning smell was the belt. The belt was moving freely, and the smoke had stopped. However the power steering had stopped working. Evidently what has happened the P/S pump had grounded internally causing the large positive power lead to the pump to begin melting down. Is the power steering pump the cause of the melt down or the result of the melt down? Once we removed the burnt power lead from the P/S pump the alternator light went off and the alternator was able to charge the system. Evidently the alternator was severely over loaded to a point where it was not able to keep up with the demand.

I'll keep you posted on our findings?

here is the photo of the replacement pump and the destroyed pump.

Project Outline:

This project will show you how to properly replace the coolant reservoir/tank. In this procedure we will only remove enough coolant to avoid a spill when replacing the tank. If you are planning a coolant flush or replacement check out this article. The project will require removing the coolant in the old tank. Removing one mounting bolt, 2 factory pinch clamps, replacing the tank, re installing the hoses, re-filling the system and checking for leaks. This project will take about 20-30 minutes depending on your mechanical ability and skill level.

Getting Started:
First you will have to remove the fender well housing on the car to get access to the crank pulley area at the motor. This will allow you to pull off and replace the harmonic balancer while it is on the car. This tech tip shows how it will not be neccesarry to pull out motor in order to pull off the pulley. Second, you will need to remove the damaged factory balancer pulley, and then install the BMP Design harmonic vibration damper with FluidGel as an aftermarket replacement to the factory part. Let's take a closer look below.

MINI Cooper and Cooper "S" Vibration Damper Pulleys: A Closer Look
At the work table we see the entire rubber damper has completely torn off along with the pulley on this early Cooper "S" balancer (top). The Mini Cooper Balancer Pulley (bottom) has a rubber damper layer pressed together inside the pulley. The rubber has broken away and the pulley has started to move back on the hub scraping the engine resulting in damage to both.

Later Model MINI Cooper "S" Balancer Pulley Damage:
On this later model balancer the damper rubber core has failed and the entire pulley has separated from the core allowing the crank shaft to spin, but the actual pulley, belt, supercharger, and water pump would not turn. On all of the pulleys there are (3) 6mm holes to attach the puller, but first the 75mm long crank bolt must be removed using a 1/2" ratchet with a 12mm socket.

First you will need a three point puller. We have specially designed one for this job. One extension (spacer) rod to place inside the crankshaft hole. A standard 1/2 inch drive breaker bar for leverage & one 3/8 inch drive ratchet with a 12mm socket. In the video we show how to remove and install the balancer pulley on a demo engine, while this project is designed to be performed on an engine still in the vehicle from underneath the passenger fender well once removed.

Closer Look: Installing the 3 point puller.
After the spacer is placed into the center hole of the crankshaft, you will install the three point puller by "Hand Tightening" the three 6mm bolts until they are seated all the way down. The puller has a threaded extra long center bolt and spacer to pull off the balancer pulley pressed on to the crankshaft.

How to pull off the damaged balancer pulley:
Place the 1/2 inch breaker bar into the square hole of the puller, and the 3/8 inch ratched with 12mm socket on the extra long center bolt with spacer. Pull OFF the damaged balancer by rotating the center bolt clockwise and holding the breaker bar to keep the balancer pulley from turning.

How to install the New BMP balancer pulley:
To install the new balancer, first you will need to center it up on the crankshaft, and install an extra long 12mm bolt with a spacer. After the balancer pulley gets closer to the end you will need to switch to the factory bolt and torque it to factory specifications to finish the installation. You may not be aware that the passenger compartment of your MINI has an air filtration system and a replaceable electrostatic filter element similar to your home air conditioning system. As you operate the A/C or blower control, the system filters out the dust and odors from your MINI's interior. Changing the filter element on an annual basis is a must.
Most people don't realize that changing or up grading your cabin's air filter will allow YOU to breathe better!

When is the last time you changed your Cabin Filter?
Spring is just rounding the corner and the entire winter you have been operating your vehicle with windows closed. If you live in one of the hotter and more humid states you most likely operate your vehicle with windows closed and A/C on most of the year. Doing so will trap stale air and airborne germs, bacteria, and dust particles. If you are a smoker the situation is worst since these odors penetrate the headliner, carpeting, and upholstery. One of the biggest culprits for introducing contaminants is the shoes from the drivers and
passengers. Since on all vehicles the A/C intake system is near the passengers and driver foot well area, any dirt, dust, mud, and debris deposited into the carpet during the winter was eventually fired at your face the first time you felt a need to turn your A/C on high during late spring.
In the past, automotive air conditioning recirculation systems would filter the cabin air through a very porous foam type filter element. These types of cabin filter elements were not a serviceable item, access was virtually impossible, and the foam would typically deteriorated after about 6 years. The assumption was always that the air in your vehicle was relatively clean.
MINIs are equipped with a small A/C cabin filter element. The filters are designed to trap all dust and/or solid particles. This is a major improvement over the window screen style filtration of the 70's and 80's. Unfortunately most car owners are not aware that this item even exists and requires annual replacement, and more often in dusty areas that have high vehicle population. The only indication that you would experience is that the A/C does not seem to have the force that it did when the vehicle was new. Similar to a dirty engine filter, restriction reduces airflow and volume. I have discovered that to increase flow volume in some vehicles, dirty cabin filters had been removed and discarded without installing a replacement element. This does increase A/C pressure however it contaminates the ventilation system and clogs the A/C evaporator core.
Check our web site to see if a cabin filter is available for your vehicle. As an option, many applications offer an active carbon filter element that not only filters out solid particles, but also cigarette and pet odors. This is a great solution to the musky damp odor of a smoker's vehicle during A/C operation.
On the Mini Cooper "S" the coolant expansion tank is a very common failure. The engine coolant system is under pressure during operation, and if there are any defects in the coolant reservoir it is recommended to replace the tank before a catastrophic failure occurs leading to coolant loss and costly engine damage. An inspection to the engines cooling system is easily diagnosed! (see below)

 1. The coolant reservoir tank must be removed from the vehicle to ensure proper inspection for damage.

 2. Inspect the seams around the middle of the unit for coolant stains and leaks that develop while the unit is under pressure during operation.

 3. Coolant build-up and white deposits form at the corners and sides, and coolant leaks begin to run down the side of the tank. Also, cracks in the plastic are common around the corners & filler neck.

 4. The coolant leak is mostly visible from the bottom side and may go unnoticed in the driveway. This is often due to the fact that the system is under operating pressure while driving. Once the vehicle is turned off or left sitting overnight the vehicle is slowly bleeding pressure off and may not present with a leak until there is a catastrophic leak. This is why a visual inspection is critical. Watching for a "low coolant" warning light or finding that you have to add coolant from time to time is an indicator that something is definitely wrong.

 5. You may already see the tank has turned a darker color as the plastic begins to deteriorate, but appears to have no leaks from the top view.

A brand new OE Replacement Tank with Cap is easily installed in minutes and could save the life of your Mini Cooper's engine, or add to the years of operation.
The Mini Cooper window regulator is a common source for window failure or malfunction. There seems to be very few issue with window switches or the electric motors. Early failure typically will start with a stuck window that requires operating the switch up and down to dislodge the window regulator mechanism. As the problems progress you may experience an audible pop or snap inside the door panel. This sound is caused by a damaged cable wheel that has broken or become out of alignment. This causes the cable to jump track, and eventually break. This may be accompanied by the window shifting off center or becoming loose in the door track. In some cases you can re align the window as a temporary fix to get the window closed. If for any reason you get a loud grinding noise, its best to avoid operating the motor so as not to damage the window motor drive gear assembly.

Emergency window opening and closing:
In most cases the window will fail in the closed or up position. To get the window down. You can try this, it has always worked for me, however use it only as a last resort the get the window down once or twice. Use the palm of your hand to smack the door panel right at the middle of the arched door handle. At the same time someone should be operating the window switch in the down position. WARNING: Don't hurt your hand, or break your door panel, use common sense. NOTE: This is not an official Mini U.S.A. repair recommendation! Remember the stress put on the electric drive motors and plastic gear assembly is not designed to work under this type of stress for very long.

Window gets stuck midway or down:
If this occurs the window will most likely be shifted out of alignment. The reason the window is now stuck is because it's jams in the tracks. On the end that is lowest grab the glass from both sides and try to realign the window to its original position. While someone operates the window switch in the up position. In this situation once the window is up, leave it up and plan for the window regulator replacement.

You need to check out the PROMINI Oil Changer. No lifting the car!

First, under the hood, locate the yellow engine oil dip stick toward the front of the vehicle.

Second, pump up the Liqui-vac oil container aprox. 50 times.

Third, remove the dip stick and set it aside.

Now, you simply insert the suction tube into the dip stick tube of the vehicle.

Then, open the suction valve on the Liqui-vac container neck to start the flow of oil. Within 8 minutes the oil from your engine will magically transfer over to the oil changer recycle canister. While this is happening you can be getting your oil filter ready and open your bottles of Redline oil and be ready to fill the crankcase, and be finished in about 10 minutes total.

When the oil has finished running, close the suction valve on the container neck, Remove the suction tube and and transport the oil as normal to a recycling facility.
Finally, you are ready to change the oil filter and add fresh Redline oil, then replace the dip stick.
